I stumbled upon this photo last night and I instantly fell in love with it. I know it looks really simple, but somehow, it just connected with me. Further thought quickly revealed why.
This photo beautifully portrays one of my life passions- growth. It’s interesting to observe how the lusciously green tree is nestled in the rather strange environment of human hands. I guess looking at this image reminds me of God’s promise to keep us safe in His hands. It even resonates deeper when I recall that we’re called “trees of righteousness” (Isaiah 61:3). Looking at it again, I can’t help but picture myself growing in the arms of a loving heavenly Father.
Talking about growth, I’ve come to discover that it’s one of the central themes in the bible. In several verses, we’re encouraged, sometimes even commanded to grow and improve and move from one phase to the next throughout our lives. I believe it’s very important to God that we make progress. He’s bothered when we hit a stagnant patch of little or no improvement in our existence. Check out these verses:
“But GROW in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ…”
(2 Peter 3:18)
“And this is my prayer, that your love may abound (GROW) more and more in knowledge and depth of insight”
I’ve always wondered what Jesus’ teenage/early adult life was like. Think about it for a minute. What was His life like when He was 20? What about when he turned 23? Or even 25? Has this question ever crossed your mind? We saw Him when he was 12 and bingo, the next time He showed up, He was already a 30 year old man! What ever happened during those 18 special years? They seem to be a blur. Or were they?
After scaring His parents by staying behind in the temple at age 12, there are only two statements in the entire bible that give us a peek into the hazy 12-30 years gap of the Masters life. They’re found in the last two verses of the second chapter of Luke.
“And He went down with them (after they found him in the temple) to Nazareth, and was subject unto them…”
The next verse condensed 18 years into just 14 words-
“And Jesus increased (GREW) in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man”
Wow! I can’t help but pause to think right there. What a summary! 18 years (which was more than half) of the saviour’s life on earth was boiled down to just one activity- GROWTH. I’m almost certain that most of us reading this are right now somewhere in the midst of that 12-30 years chamber. What better summary would you like to be used for these years of your life? What summary could be better than that of Jesus himself? Wouldn’t you love to be described just as He was?
Dear friend, you’re in a special season of your life. Don’t let it slip through your fingers. Get a firm grip on it and make the best use of it. Grow in this season. Get planted in your purpose (afterall, there’s no way you can ‘grow’ if you’re not ‘planted’) and live everyday aiming for that same summary that Jesus had. It’s a beautiful time of your life- live it by design and become the very best version of yourself.
Cheers, to your growth!
