Just about a decade ago in Nigeria, the number and kinds of friends a young person could have was basically limited to the size of his school or the length of his street. The source pool was quite narrow- and that narrowed choices even more. Fast forward to today and the difference is truly staggering. Thanks to social media sites and mobile devices, any young person instantly has access to a world of friends- literally.

Today, it’s possible to sit in the corner of your dark room (all thanks to PHCN!), stick on your earpiece, break out your hand-held device and voila, you’re in touch with people, not just in a different part of the country but on a different continent! Sure we take it for granted now, but ask your parents, they never remotely dreamed of such experiences.

The internet has given us amazing opportunities and power; not just the power to goof-off online or gulp in mindless trash and chaff on the internet, but power to collaborate, to instigate changes, to meet like-minded people from all over and build networks that really work.

But I have to ask you: what are YOU doing with all this power at your fingertips? How has social media upgraded your life? What are you doing with the opportunity to make ‘friends’ in ways that your parents couldn’t imagine?

Online friendships have come to stay. That’s where the world is right now-online- and it doesn’t look like it’s coming back. So how do YOU, dear young person, make the best of this new reality? Yes you’ve got over 2,000 friends on facebook and double that number of followers on twitter (let’s not even get into instagram, whatsapp, linkedin, 2go, the once-almighty BBM and the other ‘tiny-tiny’ ones…loll). The challenge is, how do you convert this large pool of potential ‘friends’ into a choice network of worthwhile connections? Since the length of time we spend online seems to be heading farther north every day, how can we as young people ensure that we get the best value for our time and convert those hours into relational value? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Happy sharing!
