Day 5: Fire Vs. Fire (The Big ‘Y’)

The Professor strolled in and handed out a sheet to each student.

He announced to the confused faces, “welcome ladies and gentlemen. It’s great to have you around. What you have in your hands are my questions for your final exam at the end of this course“.

Noise levels crash to deafening silence.

He continued “l will cover every topic in the syllabus and do my best to teach you all that is needed to pass this course. There will be tests along the way but everything will be based strictly on what I teach. Any questions?“, he concluded with a knowing smile.

He’d seen this reaction from every class of  freshmen. There was no surprise when the anticipated question came from the back row.

But why? Why are you revealing your exam questions even before your first lecture?

The chorus nod that swept across the room showed everyone’s agreement. The curiosity was palpable.

The Professor waited while the students laughed off a smart remark from a voice near the window. Silence soon returned as 48 eyes search his face for an answer.

Well, it’s because I love you and want you to ace my course. It’s my joy to watch my students learn, understand and excel in my class. What do I stand to gain from your failure?

Everyone was stunned.

Of course, the Professor kept his word.

Imagine being in that class.

Now imagine still failing at the end of the semester.

How stupid would that be?

Guess what.

You’re in that class TODAY.

God is the Professor. We’re all the students. That class is Life 101.

Long before you and I got enrolled, our final test was written and published. It’s no secret. He’s handed it out to each of us.

From the story of the talents in Matthew 25: 14-30, we decode that one of our final test questions is a report on what we did with the fires He planted in us. That wasn’t just a cute little story for Sunday school. It’s a final test question. How would you answer?

1 Corinthians 3:13-14 reveals another fact about that test.

Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

If any man’s work abide which he hath build thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

His fire will verify how well we deployed our fires.

Wonder why we’re so passionate about growing our fire? It’s the final test! This is not about fame or material gain. We will be evaluated on how well we cultivated the fires He placed within us, the fires some of you listed in the sign up form.

Think about that for a moment.

Imagine all your life’s work, everything you’ve ever done gathered into a heap and set ablaze by God’s fire.

Only work in line with your fire gets to survive. Everything else will be charred.

What will be left of your life? What will be the residue of your years?

This is no scare tactic; just a stark description of reality. The fire test will only be passed by fire-based work.

How much of that have you done? Or are you still giving reasons and excuses why you cannot do what you know burns in your heart to do?

The semester is on.

The final test approaches.

You already have the questions.

How could you possibly watch yourself fail?
