Day 11: FUEL SCARCITY

I don’t gamble but I’ll make an exception today.

If you live in my country, you KNOW the meaning of those words. You have lived it. The rest of the world knows ‘energy crisis’. We know fuel scarcity.

Fire. Fuel. Inseparable.

Fire must feed to stay alive- not too different from us. As we seek to discover, develop and deploy our fires, we must find some fuel. I heard a cute line from my brother recently:

“No matter your drive, you still need fuel”

-My Brother

*ermm, if you missed the play on words in that statement, I don’t know what to say to you*

Passion is beautiful. It’s fervency is captivating. But passion needs to eat. Enter fuel. I’ll quickly share a few thoughts on two kinds of fuel your fire would find very nutritious.

1. The fuel of KNOWLEDGE.

The labour of the foolish wearieth. ..because he KNOWS NOT HOW to go to the city

Ecclesiastes 10:15

There’s a ‘how’ to everything. Today, you are only as ignorant as you choose to be. There’s too so much (free!) knowledge out there, ignorance about your fire should be a criminal offence. How can you claim ignorance when you’ve got God and google? Fela Durotoye aptly remarked.

Information is knowledge known. Revelation is knowledge unknown. Go to google for information and go to God for revelation.

Engage the power of research. Locate interest groups and glean relevant information. Subscribe to top range newsletters (most are free). Expose yourself to enlightenment and learn as much as you can. Find the 5-star players in your field. What are they saying? Actively pursue relevant knowledge.

My son, if you will RECEIVE my words, and HIDE my commandments with you

So that you INCLINE your ear to wisdom, and APPLY your heart to understanding

Yea, if you CRY after knowledge, and LIFT UP your voice for understanding

If you SEEK her as silver, and SEARCH for her as for hidden treasures

Proverbs 2:1-4

From these verses,  do you sense how DELIBERATE your hunt must be?

Have you ever been in the presence of a deeply knowledgeable individual with a penetrating grasp of their field/fire? It’s a stimulating experience. Adequate, relevant and updated knowledge can arouse your smoldering embers to a fierce inferno. Feed your fire.

2. The fuel of RELATIONSHIPS.

There are two kinds of relationships you need to cultivate to sustain your fire.

-Mentors

I know, I know. You’ve heard it a gazillion times.

So what have you done about it? Yes, tell me. What have you done with what you claim to know?

Who are your mentors?

Oh please, please, don’t bore me with names from distant lands.

Who do you periodically meet with for advice and encouragement as you grow your fire? While I do not dispute the possibility of long-distance mentorship, I strongly believe every serious-minded youth should have AT LEAST ONE mentor who they share a deeply personal, face to face relationship with. Books and mails have their place, but nothing can replace face to face.

-Sparring Partners

I blogged about this in the countdown to this month’s journey.

Want to know one of the best ways to stay committed to your fire? Share it with a passionate friend.

Not a yes-man who’d pat your back when you’re drifting into complacency but someone who’d challenge you and hold you accountable, someone who’s not scared to ask the tough questions, who works you past your excuses. You need this is if you’re serious about developing your fire.

We all have those days when we don’t feel like doing anything. Your sparring partners will help shake off the dross and get you back in growth mode.

You have so much around you, you really have no excuse. Neither do I. We just need to look in the right places.
